Periodontitis treatment – preserving gums, securing teeth

Periodontitis – often colloquially referred to as “periodontosis” – is a widespread inflammatory disease of the tooth-supporting structures. It usually begins as gingivitis. If left untreated, the inflammation spreads deeper and gradually leads to loss of jawbone – in the end, teeth can become loose and fall out.

The 6th German Oral Health Study (DMS • 6) shows how common the disease is: in 35- to 44-year-olds, signs of periodontitis can be found in around 95 percent of cases – the vast majority, however, in early stages that respond well to treatment. Severe forms affect around 17 percent of this age group. That is why early detection is so important.

How can I recognise periodontitis?

Periodontitis often develops slowly and is initially painless. Typical warning signs include:

  • gums that bleed when brushing or eating
  • red, swollen or sensitive gums
  • persistent bad breath or an unpleasant taste
  • receding gums – teeth appear “longer”
  • sensitive tooth necks
  • teeth that feel loose or shift slightly

If you notice any of these signs, you should have them checked by a dentist. The earlier periodontitis is detected, the more gently and effectively it can be treated and halted.

How do we treat periodontitis?

Treatment focuses above all on cleaning the periodontal pockets as thoroughly as possible, where harmful bacteria accumulate. For cleaning, we use gentle ultrasonic and hand instruments in our practice.

If bacteria have settled deep in the gum pockets, additional treatment with medication (such as an antibiotic) may be required. Which agent is appropriate depends on the bacteria involved – we carry out targeted bacterial diagnostics beforehand. This allows treatment to be tailored precisely to your findings rather than relying on guesswork.

More than just a problem in the mouth

Periodontitis does not only affect the teeth: studies show links with general conditions such as diabetes as well as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Early treatment therefore protects not only your teeth, but can also have a positive effect on your general health.

So that it does not return

After successful treatment, regular follow-up care is crucial. Professional teeth cleaning at fixed intervals removes bacterial deposits where home care does not reach, helping to prevent the inflammation from flaring up again. You can find out more on our preventive care page.

If you are looking for periodontitis treatment in Rudow or one of the surrounding districts of Berlin, we will be happy to help – the earlier treatment begins, the better your teeth can be preserved.
